this is "today in the bay." it is 4:31. good morning, everybody. happy you could join us. i'm jon kelley. >> and i'm marla tellez in for laura garcia-cannon. a whole lot to get to today. let's check the forecast with christina loren. >> good morning to you, jon and marla. good morning to you at home. we've got a good-looking day shaping up. we are expecting the showers but not until you start to ride home from work over the course the evening into tonight. we've got the best bet for seeing that shower chance. this morning i want to point out how cold it is. we're at 46 in santa rosa, 48 in novato and temperatures will continue to tumble the next hour so grab that coat if you're heading out the front door. first let's check your drive. >> we're looking at fremont 880 and there's a light flow of traffic just north of tesla, the

truck scales at the top of your screen. we do have an issue at mission boulevard off of 880, north or south getting onto mission you have typical overnight construction we've had for the last week. so auto mall parkway is your connector from 880 over to 680 a little north of here. farther south of milpitas, 880 starts to lose lanes. you're down to one lane by montague expressway but that clears up at brokaw. that's good news for me because i thought i would possibly be late. we wouldn't want that because then you wouldn't have me talking. 4:32. we begin with decision 2012. president obama hits the campaign trail in ohio today after wrapping up his business right here in the bay area. >> indeed it was a profitable business. the president raising roughly $4 million in less than 12 horizon and that is on the conservative side. mr. obama receiving the standing o last night. he spoke for a total of 25 minutes telling supporters the

future of the nation is at stake. >> i'm not fighting for red values or white values or black values or latino values, gay or straight values, i'm fighting for american values. they belong to all of us. san francisco, we are not as divided as our politics would suggest. we've got more -- >> an energized president highlighting accomplishments his administration has made over the last three years and he criticized romney claiming, no, the facts do not hold up. >> a few nights ago suddenly a guy pretending to be mitt romney stood on a stage next to me and said he's changing his plans. he's just going to pretend it doesn't exist. what $5 trillion tax cut? i don't know anything about a $5 trillion tax cut?

don't pay any attention to that tax cut behind the curtain. >> the president's motorcade returning to the hotel intercontinental where he spent the night. he will depart for sfo a little later on this morning. those who were able to get tickets to last night's event said it was well worth the cost. >> it was amazing. the krou was so excited to have him here. i think it was really great to have him come to san francisco to the bay area. he definitely connected with everyone in the auditorium. >> it was extremely enthusiastic. he riled the crowd up. extremely good, eloquent words. i've never heard anybody speak so great. to hear that is once in a lifetime. >> security around the bill graham civic auditorium was extremely tight. those who did attend that concert had to walk before they got there. there were also road closures. traffic was congested as drivers tried to find alternate routes.

california highway patrol and san francisco police both working with the secret service and were, as you can imagine, highly visible around that area. as the president makes big money in the bay area, is republican rival is making big gains after last week's debate. a new poll by the pew research center shows mitt romney is now even with the president among registered voters, tied at 46%. just last month romney was trailing the president by nine points. the poll also shows among likely voters, romney holds a four-point edge over mr. obama, 49 to 45. we do have complete coverage of the president's bay area visit online at nbcbayarea.com, including insider details on the president's private event. meantime mitt romney will be in ohio today trying to win over the undecided voters n a speech on foreign policy yesterday, romney argued the president's policies have made the world more dangerous. romney talking about arming

syria's rebels and sanctioning iran. democrats were not impressed. >> i'm a professor. if one of my students turned it in, they'd get a c because he gave absolutely no specifics. >> when president obama leaves the bay area, he will head to ohio as well to also reach out to undecided voters. in other news now, it is decision day for san francisco's suspended sheriff, ross mirkarimi. san francisco's board of supervisors will vote on his fate today. the embattled sheriff pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges related to an argument with his wife that left her arm bruised. bay area political experts say the vote is the first modern test of the idea of official misconduct. today's vote will be held at city hall at 2:00 this afternoon. in order for mirkarimi to lose his job, nine of the 11 supervisors need to vote against him. the fbi has been called in

to help hercules police investigate the killing of a well-known retired schoolteacher. more than 200 people joining susie ko's family for a candlelight vigil in front of their home. ko was found in that home stabbed to death on friday night. her husband became suspicious when she failed to pick him up at the airport. >> spent the first 10 to 12 years looking after the kids. she offered her help to everybody. >> we are still looking for the vehicle. when it left here, it had an idaho license plate to the best of our knowledge but we wanted to let the community know that the plate may have been removed. >> the suspect or suspects who allegedly took that car are in a car that is a sky blue subaru outback with idaho license plate number 1a1f680. the family has launched a website called

welovesusieko.com. if you have any information on this situation, please call the hercules police department or call the fbi. it has been more than two years and we're still asking how much will pg&e pay for the deadly san bruno blast. the answer will be decided behind closed doors. a judge has approved a request to suspend public hearings and hold closed door negotiations on this matter. local lawmakers are protesting this decision. they say the pipeline talks should not be hidden from public scrutiny. the judge says the suspension will allow a quicker settlement. eight people were killed an dozens of homes destroyed in the explosion on september 9th of 2010. no doubt about it a lot of nervous bail fans across the bay area this morning and that is for one simple reason. you've heard the expression do or die time. the a's and the giants have to win today or they will be out of the playoffs. >> let's go oakland.

>> yesterday a spirited crowd rallying at oakland city hall. the a's are trailing the detroit tigers two games to none in that best of five series. some fans putting pressure on a's management to remove those tarps covering 20,000 seats in their stadium so more fans can pour in an cheer for the team. >> over five days collected 10,000 plus signatures from people who want the a's to remove the tarps. we're sending the letter to them demanding they take the tarps off. >> we can tell you the a's do plan to remove those tarps if the team advances to the next round. that means winning three straight. today's game at the coliseum sold out. game time is just after 6:00. if necessary, both games four and five will be wednesday and thursday, both at the coliseum. as for the giants, they are also, unfortunately, facing elimination tonight. they'll have to win all three games in cincinnati to advance. game three is this afternoon starting at 2:30.

keep that in mind. temperatures, though, today very comfortable. 67 in san francisco, 71 in oakland, 71 in san jose and 72 degrees in almaden valley. we'll talk about a warmup on the way and then we get more rain heading into next week, so much to do when it comes to your forecast. let's find out how the drive is shaping up. hi, mike. >> good morning. look at this, this is 101 coming through san jose. before we get there, the map shows you the area i talked about earlier for 880 south coming out of milpitas and heading down toward 101. we still see some yellow although over the last five minutes i saw a good deal of slowing crop up and sort itself out, 237 down to brokaw. that may be an indicator they started to move some of the cones. be prepared for that as crews do adjust. you'll have to adjust your speeds as well. we see a little slowing down to highway accept but that should sort out itself again. live look outside shows you palo

this morning former penn state assistant football coach jerry sandusky will be sentenced on 45 counts related to child sexual abuse. the 68-year-old former defensive coordinator could face hundreds of years in prison. back in june a jury convicting sandusky of sexually abusing and raping ten boys. now, don't expect any kind of apology here. yesterday an unrepentant sandusky released a taped statement to a college radio station maintaining his innocence. >> they can take away my life. they can make me out as a monster, they can treat me as a

monst monster, but they can't take away my heart. in my heart i know i did not do these alleged disgusting acts. >> the attorney for one of the victims responding with this statement saying, quote, i keep hoping he will do the right thing and take responsibility for his actions, but it appears that day will never come. sandusky is expected to speak before sentencing, as are some of his victims. 4:46. there are more cases and more deaths caused by the meningitis outbreak that's linked to tainted steroid injections. the centers for disease control and prevention says the number of confirmed infections is up to 105 in nine states. eight people have now died from it. investigators believe the steroid was contaminated and came from the new england compounding center, which shipped steroid vials to doctors and clinics in 23 states. so far tennessee is reporting the most cases. the international monetary fund says the global economy is still getting weaker.

in its latest economic forecast, the imf says in advanced economies like the united states the growth is too slow to make a serious dent in unemployment. for emerging economies like china, the imf predicts growth will begin to slow down. keeping up with the dollars and cents, stock markets will be running again today at full speed after a sluggish holiday. for that and the rest of the news before the bell, let's turn things over to courtney reagan. he's live at cnbc world headquarters. good morning, courtney. >> reporter: good morning to you, jon. futures are lower this morning as investors react to the imf cutting its forecast for global economic growth this year and next. stocks did fall monday on very light volume. there was no economic data to trade on due to the columbus day holiday. earnings system kicks off this afternoon when alcoa reports third quarter results. today is also the fifth anniversary of the dow hitting its all-time high of 14,164. the dow is just 580 points off

that mark at this point. we slipped 26 points monday to 13,583. the nasdaq fell 23 to 3112. facebook doesn't just want you to like something, it wants you to want it. the social networking site is teaming up with retailers to test a want button. users will be able to create wish lists of products like clothes and home furnishings. this could lay the groundwork for facebook to make a push into e-commerce although now the company will not collect a fee if you buy a wish list item from a retailer's website. back to you. >> it will be interesting keeping an eye on facebook as this transpires trying to raise that stock price. >> speaking of wants, i want a nice want. >> christina loren. >> good morning to you. thanks for waking up with us each and every weekday morning. let's go ahead and talk about what's happening out there this morning. people already tweeting me about how cold it is up in the north

bay, so make sure you pull out that jacket, dust it off if you have not yet had to as we just kicked off fall. 50 degrees in livermore, 50 in concord and 56 in san francisco as we continue to get less daylight hours. oh, that means we're going to get colder and colder each morning but we're not talking about frost just yet. probably a couple of weeks away from the first frost of the season. we have an interesting setup. the jetstream is the river of air that carries our low pressure system from west to east across the united states. this cutoff low has been cut off from the jetstream so it's had nothing to push it inland. look at this, let me step out of the way. look at what's developing out in the eastern pacific. a very substantial storm system likely going to bring us rain next week. finally going to nudge this guy inland enough to have some showers. we had a little isolated activity. today we'll see a little more but not expecting anything heavy. enough, though, of that precipitation to purify our air quality. 68 degrees today in santa cruz,

not too shabby there. you'll notice we're not getting a lot of separation in terms of temperature. it's that time of year, things are going to be cool just about everywhere. 71 degrees in oakland today. as we head through tomorrow, temperatures drop off. we'll get a few showers in the morning and then clear you out. now, i know baseball fans, i know that we have the odds stacked up against us, but the weather is in our favor today in both cities where the giants and a's will be playing. we'll take a close look at those forecasts. also we'll talk about who is going to see the warmest weather heading into the weekend because we do have a warmup on the way. >> already talking about the weekend, i like it. soda companies are rolling out new vending machines that will display calorie counts on soft drinks. coke, pepsi and dr. pepper will show the numbers on the different buttons of the machine. the american beverage association which represents the soft drink company says the machines will remind customers

to consider alternatives with messages such as, quote, try a low calorie beverage. well, the size of your refrigerator could be linked to the size of your waistline. a professor at the university of north carolina at chapel hill says the growing scale of home appliances is enabling stressed out and overworked families to stockpile convenience foods, which typically are less nutritious than homemade meals. according to the association of home appliance manufacturers, refrigerators now average 22.5 cubic feet compared to 19.6 cubic feet in 1980. >> let me get this straight, the rationale is if you want to lose weight, buy a mini fridge. 4:51. coming up, president obama will not be the only u.s. president in the bay area today. we have the unusual case that's bringing former president clinton to northern california. and he is going for a new world record but it may cost him

his place. pi bill clinton will be visiting northern california. he'll attend a campaign rally at uc davis. he's in town to support several congressmen in the middle of tight races. president clinton has been keeping busy this election season. he's been in the forefront lending his support to president obama and other major candidates. >> of course the current president is in the bay area right now. let's check in with mike inouye. he'll be heading out to sfo. >> he's the president and he doesn't have to get up as early as we do while he's up late doing a lot of work for the country. looking over here to the golden gate bridge. the president will head out to sfo so we'll have the motorcade. they're not going to schedule it. easy drive across the golden gate bridge. to the north bay we'll look at the smooth drive but i want to show you this orange here, this is the area where the fog and the mist might affect your drive and visibility so keep that in mind. areas north of san rafael as

well. farther south we're looking at the peninsula, north 101 right around oyster point. there is an accident that's off to the shoulder. we'll take you to the coast, pacifica, where we're likely to get a lot of fog as well. i point out pacifica because i have a friend, vincent that's in first grade and loves traffic. good morning, vincent. thanks for helping out with your reports around the area as well. we'll finish up this 4:30 half hour. this brings new meaning to don't try this at home. >> weather permitting, felix bumgardner's balloon will lift off from new mexico at 6:this morning. >> this is space diving, not just skydiving. >> it will carry him almost 23 miles into the atmosphere. then jump into a freefall that could break the sound barrier. scientists want to know what effect that fall will have on the human body.
